Our story, our place, our people
Our Mission
“To contribute to the development of young people in Mt Eliza and the Mornington Peninsula by providing adventurous, inclusive and youth-led programs that build character, confidence, leadership and lifelong skills through the Scout Method.”
The name Ranelagh has deep roots in Mt Eliza's history. It comes from Ranelagh House — a historic homestead and estate established in the area in the late 19th century, itself named after the famous Ranelagh pleasure gardens in Chelsea, London. The estate gave its name to the surrounding locality, and when Scouting first arrived in Mt Eliza, the group took on the name of the place they called home.
The 1st simply means we were the first Scout group established in the Ranelagh locality — a badge of honour that reflects decades of community service, adventure and youth development on the Mornington Peninsula.
Today, 1st Ranelagh Scout Group continues that tradition — giving young people from Mt Eliza and the surrounding peninsula the chance to grow, lead and adventure together.
Mt Eliza sits at the northern tip of the Mornington Peninsula, where bushland meets the shores of Port Phillip Bay. It's one of Melbourne's most naturally beautiful suburbs — and for Scouts, that's an extraordinary backyard.
Within minutes of our hall we have coastal cliffs, bushland trails, tidal beaches and open parkland. The Peninsula beyond gives us access to state forests, the Two Bays Walking Track, and some of Victoria's best outdoor adventure terrain.
For a Scout group, location matters — and we couldn't ask for a better one.
1st Ranelagh is part of a proud network of Scout groups across Victoria and Australia.

One of Australia's largest Scout states
Scouting at 1st Ranelagh is about more than activities — it's about building young people who are confident, capable, curious and kind. We follow the Scouts Australia program built around four Challenge Areas and the Scout Method.
From local hike nights to multi-day camps — the outdoors is our classroom.
Scouts lead patrols, plan activities and take real responsibility from day one.
No textbooks. Scouts learn navigation, cooking, first aid and more through experience.
Giving back to Mt Eliza and the wider world is part of who we are.
Dedicated volunteers who give their Tuesday nights (and many weekends) so young people can have great adventures.
